What is the Difference Between Makki and Madani Surahs?

Although the revelation’s location is the main difference between Makki and Madani surahs, but there are also other differences according to Muslim scholars’ explanation:

Makki Surahs Conditions:

• Every verse contained Sajada (Sujud al-Tilawah) is in Makki Surahs.
• The verses in Makki Surahs focused on the oneness of conviction of Allah’s power, paradise, and hellfire, in addition to reward and punishment.
• Makki Surah included the story of the prophet Adam (AS).
• The Story of Iblis (the Devil), who disobeyed Allah, was mentioned in Makki Surahs.
• The short Makki surahs are characterized by rhythmic melody.

Madani Surahs Conditions:

• The themes of Madani surahs stressed ethics and morals, in addition to the social laws among Muslims.
• The hypocrites were mentioned in Madani Surahs.
• Most Madani Surahs are long.
• Madani surahs focused on the relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims.
• Madani Surahs involved controversy with other faiths, who are Jews and Christians.
• Allah mentioned “Jihad” (struggle) laws in Madani surahs.

Characteristics of Makki and Madani Surahs

Both Makki and Madani Surahs have particular features that ease the differentiation between them:

• The word Kalla (كلا), which means “No” was mentioned only in Makki surahs.
• Allah mentioned the phrase of addressing (O’mankind) in Makki surahs, but Madani contained the phrase (O’ you who believe).
