Ramadan holds special significance as the month of the revelation of the Holy Quran and a time of mercy, forgiveness, and protection from the Fire. The importance of fasting in Ramadan lies in possessing piety, restricting the ego, giving thanks, cultivating patience, seeking Allah’s reward, and maintaining physical health.

Muslims abstain from listening to music during Ramadan and continue working while fasting, with exceptions made for long, tiring journeys. Ultimately, Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, devotion, and gratitude, embodying the principles of Islam and strengthening the bond between believers and their Creator.

Ramadan is a blessed month for Muslims where they fast the whole month for the reward of Allah. Here we will discuss everything you do in Ramadan and fasting in Ramadan.

What is The month of Ramadan?

The month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim lunar year (Hijri Calendar). The Month of Ramadan comes after the month of Sha’ban, followed by the month of Shawwal. Allah Almighty preferred Ramadan over the rest of the months of the year because it has one of the pillars of Islam, namely fasting during Ramadan.

The month of Ramadan was derived from the Arabic word “al-Ramad ” which means intense heat.  Because it often comes at a time of heat in the Arabian Peninsula, and the Arabs used to call the month the time in which it falls. Scholars also reported different reasons for its naming.

Why do Muslims Celebrate Ramadan?

Muslims celebrate the month of Ramadan because Muslims consider Ramadan a divine month. Ramadan has many spiritual secrets. Though Ramadan is considered a hard time due to fasting all day, most Muslims- whether they are righteous to Allah or those who are far away from Allah’s path- love Ramadan month.

Muslims all over the world celebrate the month of Ramadan every year because It is the month that its beginning is mercy, its middle is forgiveness, and its end is protection from the fire.  Allah put much passion in our hearts towards this holy month to the extent that many Muslims cry in tears when it ends up.

Why Do Muslims Fast During Ramadan?

When we were young, during an Islamic religion session, one of the students asked the teacher, “Why do we fast Ramadan?” He answered we fast during Ramadan in order to feel the sense of hunger that poor people always feel. I remember that I commented, ” the poor people should not Fast then!!”

Here are the reasons behind fasting:

1. Obeying Allah As The Messenger Ibraham Did.

In fact, the reason that says we fast to feel the sense of hunger of poor people might be one of reasons that we Fast. But I don’t think this is the main reason that we fast. We Fast because Allah asked us to Fast.

2. Obeying Allah As The Messenger Isma’il Did

Though Isma’il (peace and blessings be upon him) knew that Allah asked his father Ibraham to slaughter him, he did not argue with his father about the reasons that Allah had ordered him to Sacrifice with his son. Instead, He immediately said,

“O my Father, do as you are commanded; you will find me, God willing, one of the steadfast do what”

Surah As-Safat verse,102

3. An Important Lesson on the truth of obedience to Allah

Fasting during Ramadan is an important lesson about the truth of obedience to Allah the Almighty. True Muslims obey Allah without argumentation. Allah tests our patience and obedience to his commands.

4. Ramadan is The Month of The Holy Quran

Muslims Fast during Ramadan because it is the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed

5. Ramadan is The Month of Mercy and Forgiveness

The Prophet said, “The first part of the month of Ramadan is mercy, the middle of it is forgiveness and the last part of it is protection from the Fire.”

What is the Wisdom Behind Fasting in Ramadan?

The wisdom behind fasting is similar to the wisdom when Allah asked his prophet Ibraham (peace be upon him) to slaughter his son:

“Then, when he was old enough to accompany him, he said, “O My son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you; see what you think.”

Surah As-Safat ayah 102.

You have to notice how the Messenger Ibraham obeyed His Lord without argumentation.

Wisdom From The Legality Of Fasting: There are many various reasons Behind the importance of fasting.  Allah has decreed to his worshipers Ramadan, the month of fasting, and made it an imposition of Islam, a great month that includes wonderful secrets and great benefits, if man thought about their meanings, he would realize the great blessings of God for him and all people.

What is the Importance of Ramadan in Islam?

The Egyptian legal opinion house (Dar Al Iftaa) mentioned six reasons for the importance of Ramadan and the wisdom behind fasting it:

1. Fasting is a Means of Possessing The Piety and Obedience of Allah the Almighty.

Because if you abstain from the necessary permissible deeds, such as food and drink; due to the fear of God’s wrath and punishment. It would make it easier for you to withhold the taboos and be blessed with the goddess, in the purity of Allah the Almighty.

2. Fasting Is a Means of  Restriction The Ego With Devotion And Faithfulness

The Muslim who fasts knows that no one but Allah can figure out the truth of their fasting, and if he wishes to leave the fasting, without being discovered, he can easily do.

Therefore, nothing makes them fast except that they know they are seen by Allah, and nothing makes them leave fasting except for the fear of Allah and seeking God’s approval and satisfaction.

3. Fasting is a Way of Giving Thanks.

By abstaining at fasting time from the food, drink, and other legitimate desires that God has bestowed upon man, man reveals the extent of those blessings, bounties, and gifts.

4. Teaching The Soul to Be Patient With Hunger, Thirst, and Lust

by curbing its insatiable appetite for pleasure, for the soul that is driven by the passionate lust for pleasure is easier to respond to Satan when he attempts it and decorates the pleasures and lusts. The soul is in need of restraint, discipline, and adjustment to be grateful to the grace of Allah.

5. Allah Ascribed the Truth of Fasting To Him, And He Shall  Reward those Who Seek Him

The Prophet said, (Allah said), ‘Every good deed of Adam’s son is for him except fasting; it is for Me. and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.’ Verily, the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better to Allah than the smell of musk.” Sahih al-Bukhari 5927

He who gives his life for Allah, and abandons his desires for his Maker, shall be rewarded.

6. Fasting Is Healthy

One of the secrets of fasting and its rulings is that it is physically healthy. It protects against serious diseases and sicknesses; By fasting, the body clears away waste and toxins of the foods that a person injects inside their stomachs throughout the year.

When hunger begins, the body consumes the fats and stocks, removing toxins and excreta; With less food from daytime fasting, breathing is regulated, the heart is no more under load, and the digestive system is prepared to regenerate damaged tissues.

Can a Muslim Listen to Music During Ramadan?

No, Muslims can’t listen to Music during Ramadan. Muslims can listen to the Quran’s divine music that dwells between its lines. This kind of music heals the spirits.

Should Muslims Work in Ramadan?

Yes, they should. Fasting is not an advocacy for laziness. The prophet and their companions, after him, fought many battles during Ramadan. They never broke their fasting

Can Muslims Travel During The Daytime of Ramadan?

If it is a long tiring journey, Muslims can break their fast. Then, they can fast another day after Ramadan. “But Whoever is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days. God desires ease for you, and does not desire hardship for you, that you may complete the number, and celebrate God for having guided you, so that you may be thankful.” Surah Al Baqarah 185.
