Can Women Recite The Holy Qur’an During The Menstrual Cycle?
According to Islamic jurisprudence, There are two opinions regarding women’s reciting the Quran during the Menstrual Cycle.
A. Women are Not allowed to Recite the Quran During their Period:
The first jurisprudential opinion says that it is not allowed for women to read or recite the Holy Quran. Some Islamic scholars prohibit reading the Holy Quran according to the Messenger’s hadith that did not permit reading the Quran for both menstruating women and one who is still in a state of sexual impurity (Who had sexual intercourse but they haven’t got washed yet).
It is called Janaabah according to the Arabic language linguistic idioms.
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“The menstruating woman and the one who is in a state of major ritual impurity (Janabah) should not recite anything of the Quran.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 131; Ibn Majah, 595; al-Daraqutni (1/117); al-Bayhaqi, 1/89.
B. Women are Allowed to Recite the Quran During their Period
The other Islamic jurisprudence point of view says; women can read and recite the Quran during their period with no limits. This opinion belongs to many great Islamic scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah, ibn El Qayyim, Imam Malik, Bukhari, and El Imam Ash Shafii as well.
Their evidence is based on the fact that the hadith mentioned above is not authentic or what is called Hadith Daeef (weak). It was reported by the so-called Isma’il ibn ‘Ayyash from Hijazi.
Thus, His oral narratives are not always authentic according to the great Islamic scholars who specialized in hadith knowledge. The hadith is considered weak by the majority of hadith scholars. Therefore, It cannot be depended on as a clue or proof For ensuring a Fiqh ruling. Accordingly, women can recite or read the Holy Quran, either from their memories or from the Al Mushif Ash Sharif (The authentic paper version of the Holy Qur’an book) but considering some cautions.
In light of the foregoing, During the menstrual period or after giving birth, in her post-natal bleeding period. It is allowed for women – according to the majority of Islamic schools of legal decisions- to recite the Quran during the Menstrual Cycle.
However, women should adopt a few cautions when applying this type of reading. She must be cautious not to touch El Mus’haf Ash Sharif (the authentic version of the Holy Quran) she can recite the Holy Qur’an from her memory. Islamic scholars find no authentic hadith that forbids women from doing so.
