What Is Surah Al-Fatihah?
In Arabic, “Fatihah” actually means (the opener/ the key), and indeed, it is so; it is the first surah of the Qur’an. Not just that, also, Surah Al-Fatihah is always the must, and first to recite in all rakahs, whenever performing any salat, the second pillar of Islam.
Furthermore, we recite Surah Al-Fatihah in many situations, other than salat, and for other reasons, like Ruqyah (for cure), and so on. Indeed, we can say that Surah Al-Fatihah, with its essential meanings, in Islam, is like the heart in the body.
Surah Al-Fatihah was revealed to the Prophet (ﷺ) in Makkah, before migrating to Medina. It has 7 ayahs; many Companions, and scholars said that it was referred to the Great Surah Al-Fatihah, by the ayah Allah revealed: [And We have certainly given you, (O Muḥammad), seven of the often repeated (ayahs) and the great Qur’ān.] [Al-Hijr: 87].

The Messages of Surah Al-Fatihah:
As said, Surah Al-Fatihah is like ‘the message of Islam in brief’. Let’s re-recite each ayah, reflecting on its deep, core meaning:
1. The First Ayah: Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim
Except Surah At-Tawba, all surahs in Qur’an start with “Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim” [In The Name of Allah, The Entirely Merciful, The Especially Merciful].
Yet, in Surah Al-Fatihah, it is already considered one of its ayahs, unlike the rest of Surahs. That is directly linked to its greatness, and how we should be keen on starting anything with “Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim“, as Allah is The One Who says to anything “be”, and it is. That definitely urges us to always seek Allah’s support and mercy, and return to Him, over and over again, as He is The Entirely Merciful, The Especially Merciful.
2. The Second Ayah: All Praises Are Due to Allah
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds]. It lets us praise Allah every time we recite it, and keeps us reminded that to Him Almighty, all thanks and praises are due, for each and every blessing and favor He constantly grants us, although we don’t deserve them. It is to feel grateful even for those little, hidden blessings we often overlook, or underestimate, whether in times of hardship, or ease.
Also, it reminds us that everything, seen or unseen, is under His control, only, as He Almighty is the Lord of All Worlds, The All-Capable, and The Dominant over all.
3. The Third Ayah:
That ayah is to assure us Allah’s limitless Mercy, as He, Himself introduces Himself, throughout Qur’an, as The Merciful, The Most Merciful, [The Entirely Merciful, The Especially Merciful,] etc. His Mercy encompassing everything and everyone reassures our hearts, every time we rush to Him Almighty.
It keeps us certain of His mercy, even in the seemingly-tough situations, and of His good behind every seemingly-bad situation.
4. The Fourth Ayah:
This ayah, too, shows the ultimate greatness, power and dominance of Allah, as He is [Sovereign of the Day of Recompense], as same as all the worlds are in His Hands, only.
This ayah also draws our attention to the Day of Judgment to stay mindful and alert to our deeds in life, as we will be held accountable for them all, for each and every single one!
5. The Fifth Ayah:
[It is You we worship and You we ask for help] simply defines Tawheed (monotheism), as it is the key belief of Islam! As Muslims, Allah is our only destination to seek, The Only One God, The only One in control, The Cause of The Causes, etc.
For that, He Almighty is our only ultimate refuge, and no one can help, nor harm us, but only Him. This ayah is every Muslim’s real motto in his life! ‘Only Allah, and only for His sake.’
6. The Sixth Ayah:
[Guide us to the straight path] This is originally why Qur’an is revealed to all mankind, and the main call of all Messengers, and of course, Prophet Muhammed (ﷺ)); Allah says: [And indeed, you invite them to a straight path.] [Al-Mu’minun: 73]
That is simply the most sincere supplication, and the real motivation behind every Muslim’s acts and constant tries, striving all his life, to follow the right path, truly guided by Allah, The Guide;
[Indeed, (O Muḥammad), you do not guide whom you like, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the (rightly) guided.] [Al-Qasas: 56].
7. The Seventh Ayah:
[The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray]; It confirms that guidance is a special gift-not given to all- and pure mercy from Allah Almighty, and a sign of Allah’s pleasure and favor on His servant, that we should keep struggling, and invoking Him for.
Without Allah, Who sent us Qur’an as His light, there is no guidance, whatsoever, but only darkness and loss, like those befell the disobeying peoples, before; Allah says:
[By which Allāh guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace and brings them out from darknesses into the light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.] [Al-Ma’idah: 16].
Thereupon, we can clearly see that Surah Al-Fatihah is, indeed, “the Mother of Qur’an” as it underlines its essential lessons to learn, with only a few- but great, inevitable- ayahs! Subhana Allah!
